Knitting Terms and Abbreviations

KNITTING ABBREVIATIONS AND TERMS:

In addition to abbreviations and terms, I will include some links to tutorials for some of these terms. I find that www.verypink.com offers some excellent and easy-to-follow videos.

  • bo- bind off (this is a link to multiple bind off methods)
  • cc- contrasting color
  • cm – centimeter(s)
  • cn – cable needle
  • co- cast on (this is a link to multiple cast on methods)
  • dec – decrease
  • dpn – double-pointed needles
  • frog – when you have to rip out a number of rows (say “rip it” out loud and you’ll get it.)
  • in – inches
  • inc – increase
  • k- Knit
  • k tog – knit together
  • k2tog – knit 2 together (right-leaning decrease)
  • kfb – knit in front and back of stitch
  • kfpb – knit in front and purl in back of stitch
  • kwise – knit-wise
  • lifeline – a contrasting piece of yarn run temporarily through a row of stitches. Helpful if you have to rip out and reknit several rows.
  • lh – left hand
  • m1 – make 1
  • m1b – make 1 below
  • m1pw – make 1 purl-wise
  • mc- main color
  • p- Purl
  • p2 tog – purl 2 together
  • pm- place marker
  • psso- pass slipped stitch over
  • ptf – purl in front and back of stitch
  • pu – pick-up
  • pwise – purl-wise
  • rep(s) – repeat(s)
  • rev st st – reverse stockinette stitch (right side – purl bump side)
  • rh – right hand
  • rm- remove marker
  • rnd(s) – round(s)
  • rs- right side
  • skp – slip 1, knit 1,  pass slipped stitch over
  • ssk – slip, slip, knit
  • ssp – slip, slip, purl
  • st st – stockinette stitch (right side – smooth side)
  • tink – literally knitting backwards, when you need to undo several stitches
  • ws- wrong side
  • wy – waste yarn
  • wyib – with yarn in back
  • wyif – with yarn in front
  • yo- yarn over
